Although a natural process, the menopause can bring with it major challenges for as the body adapts to the changes caused by declining levels of oestrogen.

Hot flushes, night sweats, weight gain, mood swings and headaches are common symptoms which can make life difficult at a time when you may also be experiencing other changes - children leaving home, career changes, caring for parents etc.

Menopausal symptoms in Chinese Medicine  are diagnosed and treated not as individual symptoms but are viewed as collections of symptoms, known in as ‘syndromes’.

Here are some of the most common syndromes we see at the clinic:

Liver Qi Stagnation

  • Irritability
  • Nervousness or excessive agitation
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Palpitations
  • Emotional instability

Kidney Yang Weakness

  • Unusually heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Intermittent or complete cessation of menstruation
  • Soreness and weak lower back and knees
  • Puffy or swollen face and or limbs
  • Cold limbs
  • Loose stools
  • Frequent urination or urinary incontinence

Kidney Yin Weakness

  • Delayed or very light periods
  • Dryness of vagina or dry vaginal secretions
  • Hair loss
  • Dizziness and/or tinnitus
  • Hot flushes and/or night sweats
  • Heat or agitation in the chest, palms and feet
  • Itchy skin / Feelings of ‘skin crawling’
  • Sore and weak lower back and/or knees

Xue Shu

  • Dizziness when standing up
  • Dry skin
  • Muscle pain or cramping in the evenings
  • Pale or washed out complexion
